I get it. You’re freaked out. You have a job interview in a few days and you’ve been rejected from the last 10 jobs you interviewed for or maybe you are meeting with a venture capitalist to pinch a business idea that has been rejected many times before. You desperately need this new opportunity to work in your favor but you already know that going into the interviews with an energy of desperation and impatience will only hurt your chances, so what do you do? You need to calm down! How do you do that?
Below are 5 tips that can help you calm down and prepare before an important Job interview:
I’m a firm believer of visualization and creating the future with your mind. You have to believe that you will get the job before you actually do. Before your interview, picture yourself working for the company. Picture walking into the office with your coffee to your cube or office space. Imagine yourself there doing the job. If you can’t picture yourself working there, then it’s probably not the job for you. Believe in your mind that the job is yours for the taking. This will help boost your confidence and calm your jitters.
2. Learn the Culture
Most people are aware that doing some basic research on a company before going on the interview is a great way to prepare, but I find that many people forget to invest a reasonable amount of time learning more about the company’s culture. Is the culture laid-back or conservative? Is the dress code strict or relaxed? Do employees tend to leave on time or stay late? Are there resource groups and fun activities for the employees to participate in or is the focus of the company solely on the job at hand? Knowing the answers to these questions will better help you understand if the culture resonates with you as an employee or partner and it also can give you insight into how you should behave during your interview to impress the hiring manager.
3. Think of it As A Conversation
It’s expected to have nervous on Job Interviews. The hiring manager knows you are nervous. However, I’ve found that changing how you think about the interview can give you the upper hand. Imagine that it’s a conversation between you a new colleague. Don’t give into to the pressure of the situation. Ask 1 or 2 questions in the middle of the interview to show that you are engaged and not in a defensive state or intimidated by the situation.
4. Be Human and Be Yourself
Pretending to be someone you are not is a bad strategy on an interview because the hiring manager should be prepared to determine the “tell tell” signs that you are faking it and that will definitely lower your chances in making a good impression. Don’t memorize all of your prepared notes answering questions like robot. Act like a human being! It’s ok to share a laugh or tell a quick short story (professionally related of course) if that is part of you personality. Before the interview starts, engage in some small talk by asking the interviewer about their well-being or talk about the weather. Show that you are likable. Most hiring managers will hire people that they like to be around.
5. Move On from Past Rejections
So you’ve been rejected from last 10 jobs you interviewed for? Move on. It’s over, you can’t change it. This is not necessarily an indication that you are not good enough for the job. If that were true, they would have never called you for a job interview to begin with. Your problem is the interview process. Don’t let your past rejections create additional anxiety for future interviews! Try reaching out to the Hiring Managers from the jobs you were rejected for and ask for feedback on why they chose not to hire you. Use that feedback to improve not to hinder.
